The concept design started from two main issues, existing house condition and house function. The first issue is the existing which provided the big opening on the west that received sunlight and heat directly and there is no wind could flow throughout the house because of a previous house extension that blocked the ventilation. The design tackled the problem by creating the courtyard to separate the extension part from the main house for getting cross ventilation and sunlight. It is also set as a hanging garden space.

The existing structure and form remained the reminiscent original character, while the facade was totally changed to serve interior spaces and respond to orientation. The facade design uses wood plastic composite material designed as a horizontal screen to replace metal bars on original windows. It demonstrates a new language design that helps to screen out the sunlight and to serve the security issue.

The second issue was the house’s function which had been controlled by the existing layout. The design applies the open plan concept in living space to integrate the flow of living, dining, and kitchen into a single space. It solves the client’s inconvenience of living and brings up activities between family members.

The exposed ceiling of the first floor reveals the original beauty of the timber structure which had been covered in the past. The original staircase design has been retained and refurbished as a sculpture piece at the center of living space. The opposite side creates double volume space that connects floor spaces in vertical directions.

Finally, the renovation house has changed the client’s living quality in terms of function usage and sense of comfort living. So, this house is designed as a living platform for the family’s member starting to live, to play and to shape their house together just the way they are.
